History
It all starts in the year 1791 when the second amendment was ratified (“Longley”). As it states "A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." (“Longley”). This gave every citizen the right to buy and own a gun without question. In the year 1871 the National Rifle association (NRA) is organized with a primary goal of improving the marksmanship of Americans to prepare for war (“Longley”).
Not soon after the NRA was founded, congress started placing restrictions and began to keep records on the guns sold to citizens (“Longley”). After the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963 is known to be when the gun control debate had officially begun (“Longley”). The public became aware of how there was little to no control on guns. The Federal Firearms Act of 1938 was the first act that limited the selling of firearms (“Longley”).
Thirty years later, the Gun Control Act of 1968 was passed to prevent the purchase of firearms for citizens not legally entitled (“Longley”). As time goes on, the debate gets more heated with valid arguments going each direction. More acts also get put into place regulating the ownership of guns however, there continues to be numerous incidents involving firearms that occur in our country to this day.
